Dear fellow Earthlings and all other intelligent lifeforms where ever you may be,
Do we live with double standards? Would you fight for or defend your friends and family even if they are in the wrong? Are you bias? What is right? Do you cheat and lie?
Shit happens all the time. I am faced with situations where no matter what I do, there has to be some “wrongness” in it. I can do what is “right”, but it sacrifices people on my side, they get left out of the fun and things like that. All because I wanted to be fair to everyone, for the greater good, utilitarianism. On the other hand, I thought - these people are my friends, shouldn’t their good be worth more than the good of others? What is ethical in this case?
On further thought, biasness, like this, perhaps could be the cause of racism.
I base my decisions on reason, and when reason fails me, I don’t make decisions(or at least I try not to). Perhaps, I leave the decision to others, so I don’t do wrong (anything wrong is not my fault, or at least not mine alone - democracy), perhaps I avoid the whole situation altogether by not even getting involved in the first place. Sometimes I have to be involved and make the decisions, because ultimately, I am the only one that can do it.
Sometimes it is easier to just follow a code of conduct set for you. Like during a war, if you are a soldier, you just shoot your enemy, even if you are on the wrong side of the war, the invader. I wonder if patriotism is ethical at all. - William Blum has said this in other words: “If love is blind, patriotism has lost all five sense” Likewise George Orwell, though not a pacifist himself, has stated that “The nationalist not only does not disapprove of atrocities committed by his own side, but he has a remarkable capacity for not even hearing about them.” (From wikipedia)
How should I rank whose benefit is more important? Mine > Friends > Others or Mine > Others or Equality? (I am not a vegan, so animals are not on the scale)
Should I value the benefit of those who would benefit me more higher? (Try social psychology, evolutionary psychology, ethical egoism on wikipedia)
I will not degrade myself to a racist and xenophobic low life. The enemy of reason is my enemy.
I need a more perfect, more reasonable set of principles to follow, and I shall find it soon.
Yours faithfully
Someone from Earth
P.S. I know these thoughts are quite jumbled, and I am not writing properly.
